Tourism in Vietnam is a significant component of the modern Vietnamese economy. In 2004, Vietnam received 2.9 million international arrivals, up from 2.4 million the previous year.
Vietnam has two World Natural Heritage sites: Halong Bay and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and six World biosphere reserves including: Can Gio Mangrove Forest, Cat Tien, Cat Ba, Kien Giang, Red River Delta, Western Nghe An. Vietnam's number of visitors for tourism and vacation has increased steadily over the past ten years. About 3.56 million international guests visited Vietnam in 2006, an increase of 3.7% from 2005. The country is investing capital into the coastal regions that are already popular for their beaches and boat tours. Hotel staff and tourist guides in these regions speak a good amount of English. Ho Chi Minh City welcomed 3,250 European tourists from two five-star international cruise ships – the Costa Classica and the Costa Allegra--on March 22 and 23. The tourists, coming mostly from Italy, Spain, the UK, and Germany, are customers of the municipal travel company Saigontourist on a tour that took them to the Mekong Delta city of My Tho, and localities in the central region, including Da Nang, Hoi An, My Son and Hue. In Ho Chi Minh City, the visitors were entertained with a city tour which includes shopping in Ben Thanh, the city’s largest market, and visits to workshops producing rice pancakes and lacquer ware.
